If you accidentally spill paint on your shirt or pants, don’t panic: We asked Carolyn Forte, director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab, how to get this tricky stain out of your belongings. Keep in mind that while some materials can withstand these stain treatments, others, such as silk, can be permanently damaged. Spot test your cleaning products to ensure they match the material. Stop what you are doing when there is any color bleeding or fading and accept your garment’s fate. Wear a smock next time.
Latex and water-based paint
Forte says that fresh latex paint is easy to wash out. If the paint is dry, you can scrape off any excess paint. Start at the back of your fabric and flush the stain with warm water. Rinse the stain with the detergent solution and continue this process until all paint is gone. Blot with alcohol if the stain persists. Attention: Acetone can melt fabrics that contain acetate and triacetate.
Oil-Based Paint
If you are interested in the stain is dry you can soften the paint by using the product recommended by the paint manufacturer for thinning it (check the paint can label). Scrape any excess paint from the surface. Next, use a white cloth to remove as much paint as you can. Rinse the fabric, but don’t allow it to dry. Lay the stain on top of a stack of white paper towels or cloths. Blot the stain with turpentine.

How to Get Paint Out of Everything Else
Upholstery
You can scrape away any paint. Mix a solution of one part liquid hand dishwashing detergent to one part cool water. Sponge the stain with the detergent solution, tamping it vigorously. Rinse the stain with the detergent solution and continue to do so until it is gone completely. If the stain remains, try blotting with acetone.
Carpet
Scrape off excess paint and, starting at the outer edge of the stain, apply acrylic paint and varnish remover. As the paint begins to soften, gently scrape it away. Continue to use the remover sparingly until you have removed all of the paint. Keep the varnish and paint remover from spreading the stain. Forte warns that if you do not, it could cause a larger stain. This can be avoided by working on each tuft individually, applying the remover carefully and making sure it doesn’t spread around the surrounding tufts.
If any paint remains, work glycerin into the stain and let it soak for several hours. Sponge the stain with a mild solution of liquid hand dishwashing detergent to one part cool water. Blot the liquid until it is completely absorbed. Sponge with a solution of one part white vinegar to 10 parts water. Blot the liquid until it is completely absorbed. Use cold water to sponge the liquid and then dry it.
